New freeware game suggestions?
I'm giving my sister and brother Macs for Xmas(old PowerMac G3 and G4 systems, upgraded to 1.1 GHz G3 and 1 GHz G4). I picked up a few games for my brother's boys(ages 5 & 10), but would like to put a few more games on them w/out impacting my budget any further than it already has been :-)
    So far I've installed
  • [link|http://www.gltron.org/|GLtron] - TRON based light cycle game(very well done, check it out if you haven't)
  • [link|http://www.macmame.org/|MacMAME] - Arcade emulator
Any other suggestions?

Thanx!

New good call
I check there periodically but never noticed the categories before.

The first thing listed, while not a game, seems to be rather appropriate :-)

New A couple ones I like

[link|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23459|SuperTux] - Mario Brothers clone with Tux as the hero

[link|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18406|Frozen Bubble ] - Very addictive, puzzle/strategy game

[link|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17608| BZFlag ] - It's capture-the-flag with tanks. No single-player mode, unfortunately. Multiplayer over the network/internet.

[link|http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=99318| Cube ] - Actually an open-source first-person shooter game engine, but you can still play around with it. Nifty graphics.

[link|http://source.bungie.org/| AlephOne ] - Bungie released the code for their innovative (for its time) FPS Marathon to the open source community. This is one of the most notable results. It's designed to be installed with a licensed copy of Marathon 2 or Marathon Infinity, but it works fine with the freely downloadable demos of these.

[link|http://legacy.newdoom.com/| Doom Legacy ] - Even more "old school" but in the tradition of AlephOne, here's what happens when the original Doom gets released to the open source community. I remember this as being one of the creepiest games I ever played at the time.

New Looks interesting
I'll definitely put SuperTux and Frozen Bubble on there, will check with my brother on the FPS - nevermind - the boy's will have their own accounts, Shawn can grant them access if he wishes :-)

New Even more freeware games
Every year [link|http://www.idevgames.com|iDevGames] has a game programming contest. The winners as well as the other entries can be downloaded for free from [link|http://www.udevgames.com/downloads/?cid=3|uDevGames].

It's kind of a mixed bag, but I've found a couple that are pretty addictive so far:

- [link|http://www.udevgames.com/downloads/?dlid=23|Ark-Annoyed] - A clever re-imagining of my old Amiga favorite, Arkanoid.
- [link|http://www.udevgames.com/downloads/?dlid=16|Snowball] - A cute little 3D maze game.

New Thanx
Used to play Arkanoid at the arcade. Played on the Amiga too, but was more into Psygnosis games by that time.

Snowball looks like it'll be fun for the boys.

.. downloading ...

Wow - both games support full screen at 1680x1050! Pretty fun too.

New A slightly belated recommendation
Jeff Minter*'s [link|http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/25447|GridRunner++]. All hail Yak. I played it on the Vic20 and the C64, and here it is once more, with feeling. And sheep.

Great fun, especially the turbonutterbastard mode, or whatever it's called...

* All hail...
Two out of three people wonder where the other one is.

New actually not
Wasn't able to make it down before Christmas. Just got back from Mexico and will be setting up their new computers next weekend.

New Found some interesting games
[link|http://shinh.skr.jp/osxbin/|Torus Trooper] is mentioned in Feb 05 Macworld, other games are interesting as well. Page is in Japanese, but the games have an English interface & instructions.

[link|http://dcsquares.c99.org/|DCsquares] is fun too. Simple, but addictive.
