No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]

New Categories?

-scott anderson

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New Nah
Don't really need to subdivide it just yet, considering the likely audience.

Unless you can think of something obvious I omitted...
-drl
New The obvious thing you omitted...
There needs to be at least one. :-)

I'd at least separate the specific sections (strings, loops, etc) from the general stuff (sociology, history, etc).
Regards,

-scott anderson

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New Ah fine
1. Theory
...Relativity
...Quanta
...Strings
...Loops

2. Experiment
.....

etc. etc. I'll work it out at home.
-drl
New I'd suggest some changes.
Don't 8 and 10 overlap? What about experiements in solid-state physics? Where would that go? Where would discussions about global warming go?

Why not start with a smaller list and see how it goes? And/Or break them up into categories like Scott suggests.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Re: I'd suggest some changes.
This is going to be mostly theorists, and the topics listed were the ones they'll most likely want to talk about. I personally would have left out strings because it isn't physics :)
-drl
New Do you think you'll get that much traffic?
We were able to start with several dozen forums because there was an "instant" population of over 100. If you have only a dozen, then 15 forums might be too many. I see web-forum sites for things from time to time and so many of them have empty forums - that probably looked like a good idea at the outset - because there just ain't enough regulars.

Wade.

Is it enough to love
Is it enough to breathe
Somebody rip my heart out
And leave me here to bleed

Is it enough to die
Somebody save my life
I'd rather be Anything but Ordinary
Please

-- "Anything but Ordinary" by Avril Lavigne.

New Suggestion

Take your topic list and reduce it to something like:

\r\n
    \r\n
  1. General
  2. \r\n
  3. Experiments
  4. \r\n
  5. Math
  6. \r\n
  7. History
  8. \r\n
  9. Sociology
  10. \r\n
  11. Speculative
  12. \r\n
\r\n

Seriously, that’s all you need to start with; add new fora as your community requires it.

\r\n

Best of luck. I’ll point Matt Nobes (physics dude from K5, all-round good egg) at it.

New There's a website on our "street"
It's run by a geek.
And he keeps good things to read.
But you should hear him speak!

When you ask him anything, he never answers "no".
He just "yes"es you to death,
And as he takes your d'oh, he tells you...
