So, one or more of the files names must have one or more trailing new line characters as part of the file name for a total of 3 such trailing new line characters. That would include the possibility of files names that consist only of a new line character(s).

Some guy's program created a *directory* with an embedded newline. Neither I nor the 20-year U-head here had ever seen anything like it.
