Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Got that
Aren't there like 301 useless startup services that can be 86ed, saving memory?
-drl
New Probably.
But this is where I hand you over to my friend Google.

I've got a gig in this box, and it's still running the default XP installation as shipped by Dell. Works well enough. I haven't dinked with it very much at all.

New Cost-benefit tradeoff.
How much is RAM?

How much can you make in the time you spend researching what can be turned off?

How often will you need that knowledge in the future?

New Re: Cost-benefit tradeoff.
It's maxed on RAM. It's old, or I wouldn't be asking this question :)

New No real benefit in XP over 2K.
Unless you are gaming. And by gaming I mean Serious 3D and such with lotsa graphics and processor usage.

No matter how much Microsoft supporters whine about how Linux and other operating systems have just as many bugs as their operating systems do, the bottom line is that the serious, gut-wrenching problems happen on Windows, not on Linux, not on Mac OS. -- [link|http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1622086,00.asp|source]

New Not even for (new) games.
Now, I'll grant that a lot of legacy (DOS mode) games work better under XP than under 2k, but 2k runs the latest 'n greatest DirectX stuff just fine. At one point, 2k was probably the most stable OS Microsoft had released, but has slipped as they have neglected it in favor of XP.

New Once you hack it...
...there are some very nice themes out there. I've got this brushed metal one I think looks quite spiffy.

I have many other machine in the 250+ days as well.

Okay... that tells you how much "booting faster" should mean.

New How's yer electricity bill?
That and I like to have a bit of quiet every once in a while.

We're not talking 24x7 servers here (at least I wasn't).

New Not a problem...
All of my machines as workstations have ACPI enabled. My one server has minimal impact.

My firewall has only one low-power drive to power besides a P166 and 64KB of memory and no Video card. (oh and 2 NICS) nofans in it... Power Supply is low-power-low-noise. The heat sinks are all big enough that they are touchable during operation.
