Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Maybe, but in this case it was programmer stupidity
I happily blame myself for over-complexifying the problem.
I have to stop Googling.
I have to start from scratch to get some fundamentals.
As I've pointed out to others, anybody who thinks they can just pick-up a language is an idiot. I was willing to do the research on Ruby, why not C#?

Problems (so far) fixed.
New Possibly, because you believed the Hype?
Micros~1 wants you to believe that, if you already know C++ or Java, then C-pigpen is a "Better <language> than <language>", and since you already know <language>, C-pibpen is a snap, all youhave to do is just "learn a little CLR" and you're already there....

New Re: C-pigpen - rofl!
Comes from [link|http://www.theregister.co.uk/2002/07/04/why_microsoft_makes_a_complete/|This Register article] where the pronounciations of the "#" are discussed. You'll find my favorite option in the section on "slang usage".

I proposed this as the "official" name for this almost language [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=44734|here]

New I must be an idiot then.
Because I've "just picked up" Java, Python, PL/SQL, and to a smaller extent Perl...

-scott anderson

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New No, you are on the other end of the spectrum
But please tell me how you "just picked up" regular expressions by reading code.
New You said, "Anyone"
And no, I picked up regex by looking at 1) a list of the possible operators and 2) a few examples. Regex can hardly be likened to a programming language, though.

-scott anderson

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New Indeed.
Conspicuous lack of shapes example in regex...

Face it. You already were when you posted that :)

New Does the sed version count?
Probably not, I wot. Where is the glob? Hidden, you knob.

"Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson..."
New I did
I started out by needing to solve a problem with a regex, and basically looking at other peoples' regexes and then much later reading the camel book gave me more information.

That's pretty much the way I learnt what little Perl I know, too.

New So based on this you consider yourslef proficient?
People should willingly pay you to solve problems in this language?
That you won't have latent bugs due to simply not understanding
how things work?

Sigh.

You just proven my point.

(you'll note I don't say this to Scott)
New Not "proficient".
But Perl code that I've written is still running doing useful work and doesn't appear to be broken.

Sigh yourself.

New So is that open toilet draining out the back of my house
But something tells me it is not up to code.
New What's the matter?
Does it nark you that a non-programmer like me can write code that does useful work in your language of choice?

You seem quite sniffy on this subject.

Of course, you'll understand that the business benefits of diverting a full-time developer to the problem of parsing Backup Exec log files are minimal at best.

So instead of pissing and moaning, I wrote the code. It sucks! But it works! And it works almost well!

The problem with this is what?

New Nothing
I apologize.

As long as it is a limited task and can't cause data breakage, more power to you.

I just seem to spend a lot of emergency FIX IT NOW time trying to fix data damaged by people who thought they were programmers. I've lost a lost of weekends that way.
