Love ya Ash,
..but ya gotta get out more.
Speilberg is the master of special effects/live action integration (see "Saving Private Ryan"). Like Wells, he's a born storyteller. The medium for scifi is ultravisual, like it or not. The original film featured SFX production by George Pal, and it set the standard for creepy, scary, beautiful-to-see scifi. Cruise is a superb action-adventure actor and will be perfect in this role. Spielberg's first love is scifi and he's sure to be swinging for the fences after the tepid "AI". In short, everything indicates that this will be a trend-setting, scary, thrilling ride.
I just hope someone out there is making "Childhood's End". No Ash - it wouldn't go on the radio.

s/a superb action-adventure/an/
And even then it's arguable.
Not quite as ossified as Keanu Reeves or Ben Affleck, but still pretty shite by any measure.

Re: s/a superb action-adventure/an/
"Eyes Wide Shut" - superior
"A Few Good Men" - brilliant
"Mission Impossible" - good
"Minority Report" - superior
"Born on the 4th of July" - Academy Award (nominated)
"Days of Thunder" - entertaining
"Top Gun" - sucked, like everything else in that shite
"Last Samurai" - superior
"Vanilla Sky" - superior
"Magnolia" - brilliant
"The Firm" - superior
"Rain Man" - brilliant
"Taps" - OK
"Risky Business" - brilliant
You can be pretty and still not suck. Just ask Ben.

You and I have different ideas about what makes an actor.
And Academy Awards ain't it as far as I'm concerned.
Now, Tony Hopkins is an ACTOR.

No disagreement there
Certainly on my top 10 all-time list.
Greatest performance?
"The Bounty", Captain Bligh
He plays Ptolemy in the upcoming "Alexander", an Oliver Stone extravaganza that should be great. Colin Farrell as the boy-warrior and Angelina Jolie in a sheet. Nice.
(Val Kilmer has a supporting role as King Philip. "Top Spear"?)

These miserable swine, having nothing but illusions to live on, marshmallows for the soul in place of good meat, will now stoop to any disgusting level to prevent even those miserable morsels from vanishing into thin air. The country is being destroyed by these stupid, vicious right-wing fanatics, the spiritual brothers of the brownshirts and redstars, collectivists and authoritarians all, who would not know freedom if it bit them on the ass, who spend all their time trying to stamp, bludgeon, and eviscerate the very idea of the individual's right to his own private world. Left one out.
The Last Samurai - Sucked in many, many ways, on many different levels. Did I mention that the genre was played out when Kevin Costner made the same film 14 years ago?

Dances with wolves.
Same basic idea, different country. There were flashes of something that could have been good (the sequence where Cruise is learning kendo, for somebody who has some experience you can see him improve gradually - good choreographing) but overall it flopped into another "noble savage" flick.
Now, I do have to say I liked Cruise's work in "Collateral", but that was more of a case of him just being a bad-ass asshole, which he does reasonably well.
Now, Spielberg, he's a whole different kettle of fish. If we get the "Indiana Jones" Spielberg and not the "AI" Spielberg, then this film will be VERY good, Cruise or no.
If not?
Don't go to see it, it will suck so much that you'll go over an event horizon.

Surely you mean an [link|http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0119081/|Event Horizon], which is pretty much the definition of "crappy science fiction film".
