New Bush Lied, People Died... and Kerry would do the same
Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry said on Monday he would have voted for the congressional resolution authorizing force against Iraq even if he had known then no weapons of mass destruction would be found.

Taking up a challenge from President Bush, whom he will face in the Nov. 2 election, the Massachusetts senator said: "I'll answer it directly. Yes, I would have voted for the authority. I believe it is the right authority for a president to have but I would have used that authority effectively."

How do the anti-war folks here feel about Kerry's statement?

New His statement says otherwise.
Did you read it? Or do you have poor comprehension?

"I believe it is the right authority for a president to have .." This does not in any way say he would use that authority the way Bush did.

" . . but I would have used that authority effectively." This states outright he would not have done as Bush did. There certainly would have been other ways to use that authority than the way Bush used it.

New I agree
His statement in no way confirms that he would have done things exactly like Bush did. In fact, his statement seems to possibly imply that Bush did NOT use his authority effectively, indicating that Kerry would use it thus.

From another [link|http://www.boston.com/news/politics/president/articles/2004/08/10/kerry_says_hed_still_vote_to_authorize_iraq_war/|source]:
''My opponent hasn't answered the question of whether, knowing what we know now, he would have supported going into Iraq," Bush said. ''The American people deserve a clear yes-or-no answer."

In response, Kerry, distinguishing between invading Iraq and authorizing the action said, ''Yes, I would have voted for the authority. I believe it was the right authority for a president to have." Kerry has said the decision to invade rested with the president.
