I ran Linspire which was Debian based, I recently switched to KNOPPIX with the hard drive install option, with the configuration to act like Debian rather than the boot Live CD version. Much easier than the actual Debian install, and I'd reconmend it for newbies over standard Debian. Only problem is that KDE is installed by default, if you are a GNOME fan, this could be a problem.
