New Film: Six-string Samurai
[link|http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0118736/|http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0118736/]

In 1957, the Russians dropped the bomb on the United States, then invaded. The last bastion of freedom, Las Vegas, is ruled by The King, Elvis. Fourty years have passed, and the King is dead. Rockers from around the country are converging on Los Vegas, to see who will be the next King.

Weird film.

Weird, weird, WEIRD film.

(Okay, not "[link|http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0072730/|A boy and his dog]" weird - but strange nonetheless.)

Death walks the land, and looks like Slash from Guns & Roses. '50s era kitsch rules the land - from the cannibal Cleaver family to the Kingpins, to the main character's glasses, guitar, and katana.

Oh yeah, there's a lot of fighting in this film, there's a lot of weird dialogue in the film, and there's this kid in the film who says almost nothing.

I'm still not sure if I liked it or not. Definitely not a "deep thought" type of film, but if you're in the right mood, try it out.

I'll let you know if I figure out which mood would be right.

New One of my BMN picks
A good mood is buzzed. Certainly not an Oscar winner but fun nonetheless and offbeat which is good. The DVD price finally came down to a reasonable level about a month ago and I snatched up a copy.

New Recommend one of PK Dick's best, then:
..if you're disappointed with the greasy kid-stuff and want a work of an authentic Writer -

The Man in the High Castle, pub 1962.

You'd Defin[i]tely like it, for his Masterful limning of an Eastern mindset, sub-rosa thoughts, etc. (PKD just had to have had a lengthy involvement there, to get so much right; whether or not he ever made it East).

in a phrase (re WW-II): The Axis Won.

(At least this is less Ding Dongs-in-the-sky than Red Dawn and other left-field not-very-Likely acid dreams) If D-Day had sunk [via mere weather, say] -- this is hardly an inconceivable outcome, much as we'd like to think ... Impossible! for all those hard-wired jingoistic emotions.)

For all youse Newbies, his cast of characters includes all of the Heavies from Hitler's gang.. from Bormann to even, the escape from a (successful, actually) plot to kill the Beast-of-Beasts, [link|http://www.joric.com/Conspiracy/Heidrich.htm| Reinhard Heydrich].

(A friend thinks this PKD's best of those read, to date)
New It's on my "when I'm done with college" list.
P.K. Dick's complete works are on my must-read list.

(Along with about 600 other books...)

Definitely recommended.

New Thirded
Big time. I have never read a PKD story I didn't enjoy the reading of.

It is much harder to be a liberal than a conservative. Why?
Because it is easier to give someone the finger than it is to give them a helping hand.
