I think it's more subtle than that. I see this as prolonged childhood, an extension of the natural narcissism of pre-pubescent youth into late adulthood.

jbrabeck's comment is very telling. What does it say? It equates self-respect with love for his family. That is very deep, and shows his complete maturity. The world is so scary now that young people seem to be afraid to grow up - so they unconsciously try to make the careless mannerisms of immaturity into virtues. Cf. also the "Baby Huey" look of hip-hoppers.
