Euwe - only champion because Alekhine was REALLY besotted. Botvinnik - An apologist for Stalin. Smyslov - An apologist for Botvinnik and Stalin. Bronstein - at least this guy had some personality. Too bad he couldn't beat Botvinnik. Tal - crazy as Fischer. Petrosian - the dullest chess ever conceived, he won by putting his opponents to sleep. Spassky - the most "normal" of an abnormal group. He even had a girlfriend. Fischer - 1st class wanker Karpov - made Petrosian look like Elvis. Kasparov - defeated by a computer, ending chess as we knew it. -drl

To not be apologists for Stalin would have meant their lives. Furthermore until Bobby Fischer upset things by simply being too good, the Russians fixed a lot of the competitions. Pampered people who are exceedingly good at doing one particular thing - thinking that this must mean they are great at everything. Lot's of athletes have done much worse things than Fischer, but they continue to earn lot's of $$$.
