Re: Javascript applet? Or Java?
Occasionally I have to be in Windows.
"Javascript and Java are unrelated technologies."
This statement baffles me.

What does that have to do with anything?
Firefox runs in Windows Just Fine[tm].
And Javascript and Java are unrelated. Which part are you baffled by, and why?

"Unrelated" is a strong word
Given the origin, not the right word, since at a minimum they have similar syntax.

Yes, and...
Java and C have similar syntax. But they're unrelated.
Java was developed by Sun. Javascript was initially developed by Netscape (IIRC, but either way, it was NOT Sun), and it was named "Javascript" and some of the syntax is similar because NS wanted to take advantage of the Hot Shit at the time, which was this newfangled programming language from Sun named Java.

all marketing
JavaScript was originally called LiveScript. The name was changed, as you say, purely for marketing purposes. You can read all about it [link|http://home.netscape.com/comprod/columns/techvision/innovators_be.html|here].

There is no significant relation
Other than being C-based languages with automatic memory management, Java and JavaScript are unrelated languages whose names resemble each other for marketing reasons. They are not in the same family of languages. For instance JavaScript and Perl are more closely related than Java and JavaScript. Here are some points of comparison:
- C-based syntax: All 3.
- True memory management: Java and JavaScript. (Perl's reference counting is the same in most circumstances.)
- OO support: All 3. With very different OO models. Perl allows anything, including multiple-inheritance. Java is single-inheritance, package based. JavaScript is single-inheritance, prototype based.
- Dynamic typing: JavaScript and Perl. A significant difference since Java fans make a big deal out of its static type-checking.
- Autocasting variable types: JavaScript and Perl. Casting between types behind your back runs counter to having solid static typechecking.
- Anonymous functions and closures: JavaScript and Perl only.
Of course you can substitute any decent scripting language for Perl, and find a lot more similarities with JavaScript than either has with Java. Perl and JavaScript are not very close, they're just both scripting languages and show it. Cheers, Ben

Javascript has similar syntax to VB, too.
Javascript is an entirely dynamic language.
Java is strongly typed.
The object/class systems are entirely different as well.
The only similarity, other than both being somewhat object-oriented and sharing a generic OO-like syntax, is the name.

After you look up "pedantic"
For all useful intents and purposes, they are unrelated. Thanks for playing, drive through.

Care to answer the original question?
I don't know if JS or J is broken - chances are pretty high that the Sun VM interacts strongly with the WSH. I never had problems with the original MS setup.

If you use it enough to care about a fix...
Then you care enough to install an alternative.
Casual (not business) users of IE who can't be arsed to install something better won't meet with much sympathy (or help, for that matter), I think.
You're especially not going to get much help without a clearer description of the problem (Javascript applet??).

Re: If you use it enough to care about a fix...
I don't have a better description. It's previously unseen behavior - not an outright crash, but clunky, typical of third party stuff on Windows.

Re: You don't have steps to reproduce it?
I just uninstalled the Sun JRE and Java Web Start. We'll see what happens. I've got everything back to "normal" for Windows.
The main symptoms were - sluggish network and image painting.
Right now it's fine.

Why are chances high that the Sun JVM interacts with WSH?
Given Microsoft's relationship with Java, I'd say the chances are, in fact, minimal.
Remember, kids - Java != Javascript. (Or ECMAScript. Or LiveScript. Or whatever you'd like to call it.)

There is no question now that the Sun JRE was the issue.
