Once in a land far to the north, there was a comedy Camelot. Known as SCTV, it was created in stark isolation and broadcast at obscure hours. Hilarious and inspired, this madcap enterprise was clearly too good for television. In 1984, after eight years of spotty production, SCTV vanished, seldom to be seen again.
Until this month. For the first time, SCTV, which Conan O'Brien has termed "the most intricate, complex, and, in a way, beautiful comedy show ever made," has been anthologized on DVD as SCTV Network 90, Volume 1 (Shout! Factory, $89.98). Getting the rights to some of the show's music derailed previous attempts to bring SCTV to home video.
