Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Wiki engine
So I'm thinking about setting up a wiki for my woodcarving online community. I'm thinking about hosting it on spaceports.com, which supports the basic PHP/Perl/MySQL stuff for free.

Limitations: 1000 files, 10Mb

I'm vaguely considering paying for hosting, since spaceports has gotten a bit popup-happy lately.

Anybody do any wiki research lately? I'm finding lots of stuff on the web - mostly in wiki form, big surprise there - but if someone else has looked into it, well, you guys are easier to comprehend and less wiki-obsessed than the wiki community.

New Don't know much about Wiki
But I do know that there is a Wiki module for ZOPE.

My parents host their website through Enteract (now it's called something else, but [link|http://www.enteract.com|enteract.com] is still active). $20/month, and they do Perl, Python, you name it.

Karsten, that is. If he doesn't respond to your query, mail him.

The Man Who Knows Fucking Everything
New Paid web hoster
If you want to pay for your PHP/MySQL/Perl hosting consider [link|http://www.pair.net|Pair Networks] they host the [link|http://www.tomshardware.com|Tom's Hardware] web page and I was using them until I decided to disband the small business I had and shut down the website. Pair promised to keep their prices at 1995 pricing, not the cheapest but they do have some of the best security. They use Apache and BSD Unix and always keep them up with the latest seucirty patches, plus they monitor your web site and promise a 99% uptime (1% has to do maintenance on the server sometime) and a scan for hack/crack attacks. Webmaster at $35/month is what you want, but [link|http://www.pair.com/pair/compare/|compare the prices to services] they give you a whole lot more if you want to upgrade to something else later.

New Try Twiki
At work we recently set one up which we are planning to use for a variety of internal things, and the person evaluating it settled on [link|http://twiki.sourceforge.net/|Twiki]. Fairly easy to set up. Works well. Lots of plugins in case you want to add features. Plenty of people are using it.

There may be better solutions out there. But it is certainly good enough for what we want.

Cheers,
Ben
New No suggestions
I've used Wiki and can explain it from that end. I haven't installed one, and don't know how they'd fit your environment. Sorry.

What part of "gestalt" don't you understand?
New Did this go anywhere?
Curious, as I've just set up a test TWiki instanciation on my box at work.

New No, we decided to continue with a standard forum
And before I could upgrade the software, I had to transfer to a better server, namely in-house, and before I could do that, the server guys had to get a larger hard disk - the money was so tight they had to get CEO (subsidiary level, not worldwide, but still...) approval, which looked like it was close to coming through (the break-even time between the cost of a hard disk and the ridiculous rates we were paying to out-source would have been about a week at most) when the axe fell.
