New "Microsoft's FAT patents aimed at Linux, claim"
[link|http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=16697|the Inquirer]:
MICROSOFT IS BEING accused of a plan to sink Linux using the US Patent system.

So claims Eben Moglen, a Columbia University law professor, the general counsel for the Free Software Foundation and a board member of the Public Patent Foundation (PubPat).

Moglen said that if Vole manages to successfully get a FAT patent it is "goodnight Vienna" for Linux, which also uses the nearly ubiquitous file system.

New How would a FAT patent deep-six Linux?
AFAIK, no core Linux modules depend on the usage of FAT...

New boot disks don't use FAT.

New Right.. Brain fart. Sorry about that...
New Interoperability, access to a FAT Windows partition come ...
to mind. It kills sneakernet. Can you imagine having to run a utility on Windows to put files on a Linux formatted diskette. It's a roadblock to migration from Windows, but not as serious as all that. It's just a damned inconvenience.

In trying to patent the simpleminded FAT, they show they have no shame.
