New How did I live without it?
Wireless that is. Just installed 802.11b in the house - wonderful thing.

D-Link DWL-640s and DI-514 router/firewall. Very easy, very nice.

This is the first tech that's wowed me since Linux 2.0.

Any point in tweaking the wireless settings?

New Wireless issues.
Every time someone brings in a notebook for adjustment it starts connecting to two or three access points in the condos next door. Hell, why pay for internet access if you live in a condo complex?

My policy, which I pass on to clients, is simple - use wireless only where you can't use wire. Reasons:
  1. Security - most wireless installations are ad hoc and totally insecure.
  2. Performance - wireless doesn't get anywhere near the bit-rate advertised (overhead), is "shared media" rather than switched so its performance degrades rapidly as you add users, and it degrades rapidly from interference, particularly from other wireless devices.
  3. Eventually lawsuits will be filed by people concerned with the possible health effects of an environment flooded with microwave radiation.
