Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Just spent 3 weeks on dial-up, surprised at how
good it was for email & browsing use.

But 2 weeks back got back on cable & compared to when I had this same service 4 years ago, it is stunningly fast now.

The day after getting it activated, I downloaded some large files from IBM (approx 4 gb). I was concurrently downloading CD images & at one point the aggregate download speed hit 620 kilobytes/second.

At the same time I was following a discussion on a cable forum about just how fast cable could be run. One person who seemed to know what he was talking about said he has 2 cable accounts using 2 cable modems plugged into the one wall outlet. Each modem ran on a different 'channel' on the cable & he used 2 particular Intel gigabyte nics that allowed him to do load balancing using Windows, between the modems whilst performing a single download. He claimed he was reaching 2 gigabits/sec (presumably from the ISP's own server).

My how times change (& networking speed up)

New DOCSIS... for the uninitiated.
[link|http://www.cablemodem.com/specifications/specifications10.html|DOCSIS v1.0 Specs]
[link|http://www.cablemodem.com/specifications/specifications11.html|DOCSIS v1.1 Specs]
[link|http://www.cablemodem.com/specifications/specifications20.html|DOCSIS v2.0 Specs]

DOCSIS == Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification

Cable modems pre v2.0 can theoretically run up to 38Mb/sec downstream, and 10Mb/sec upstream.

I don't know if this is the same for v2.0 or not. I'd hedge that it is more. But NOT at 1000 Megabit per sec range.

New What you say makes sense
I need to double check just what speed was occuring.

I am trying to locate the original post. But I can see I am saying
megabytes when I should be saying megabits.

My modem is a Motorola 5100 DOCSYS 2.0 SurfBorad.

This link says that DOCSIS 2.0 can reach 30.72Mbs per channel
