Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Need some rebuttal articles.
This article from the [link|http://www.fcw.com/fcw/articles/2004/0405/web-linux-04-07-04.asp|Federal Computing Week] is making the rounds in senior management here as USPS. I would like some well written articles to forward as a reply. As you can see, our "friend" is quoted below. Mr. Grygus, do you have anything posted that would apply?
Yankee Group: Linux doesn't save money
...
"In large enterprises, a significant Linux deployment or total switch from Windows to Linux would be three to four times more expensive, and take three times as long to deploy, as an upgrade from one version of Windows to newer Windows releases," said Laura DiDio, Yankee Group's application infrastructure and software platforms senior analyst.
...

Thanks

Joe
New How about rebuttal within the same article?
The study was sponsored by Sunbelt Software, a major provider of tools and utilities for Windows operating systems, including NT, 2000 and XP.

So the study was produced for someone with a vested interest in exactly the results achieved. News at 11.

A huge majority of the 300 large enterprises of 10,000 or more end-users that were surveyed believe a significant or total switch to Linux would be prohibitively expensive.

And it wasn't even a study, it was a survey. Umm, those are different, aren't they?

New ROTFL
Next time a [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=154864|link] would be useful though.

Cheers,

To deny the indirect purchaser, who in this case is the ultimate purchaser, the right to seek relief from unlawful conduct, would essentially remove the word consumer from the Consumer Protection Act

New Aww - going there was 1/2 the fun...

New What new windows?
All those companies that bought the subscription service to save money on the cost of licenses are now figuring they got screwed without a new release in the covered period. A fairer comparison might be the cost a subscription service without products against an actual product.

Don't forget to figure in the cost of applying service packs, patches and downtime due to the virus of the day.

New one time charge vs. ongoing costs
even if a migration to a Linux based platform takes longer than a migration to the next version of Windows (not a given, some Windows migrations have been known to take a very long time), once it's done the Microsoft licencing headaches stop. And the virus/worm headaches stop. And the stability headaches stop. And the systems can be customized so that other headaches stop too.

Rumour has it that it takes fewer Linux administrators than Windows administrators to manage an equivilent number of machines. And these Linux administrators have the time to do useful work. As opposed to patching/rebuilding/devirusing etc...

GrokLaw covered Ms. Didio's article. You can read about it as [link|http://www.groklaw.net/article.php?story=20040407003857488&query=yankee+group| Cranking Out the FUD -- and Some AntiFUD -- on TCO and Security]

New Hey, lookit that
Oh, so it's not a study of such costs; it's a survey of what some executives think it would cost? That's not the same thing.
Hmm, wasn't someone else around here saying that exact same thing?

New Seems to me I recall . . .
. . the USPS does all their OCR mail sorting using Linux clusters becaust it was far less expensive than any competing solution. Comparing mail sorting machines to desktops is apples to oranges, but comparing Linux servers to other servers does imply comparing Linux desktops to other desktops could be favorable to Linux.

Of course Ms DiDio, a friend and former co-worker of Darl McBrides, is deeply involved in SCO's Microsoft financed attack against Linux, so any paper on Linux she endorses should be disregarded out of hand.
