New VPN question
I'm working on (yet another silly) class paper, where I have to "create" a small five person office environment, as well as give it VPN capabilities. I'm suggesting Debian as the standard distro, but four of the "users" are mobile, and need to be able to connect back to the office remotely. Now, I went over to debian.org, and did a search on VPN clients, but the language therin indicates that the PPTP client is for Microsoft's proprietary technology.

If I'm setting up a pure Linux network, is PPTP the technology I should be using to connect remotely?

New depends on how the connection is to be made
ppp point to point protocol is used by DSL and dialup. A vpn is a tunnel that encrypts data, sends it across the network to an endpoint where it is decrypted and sent within the network. Now if your 4 users are hitting a database server at the base an SSH tunnel would be sufficient.
thanx,

New IPsec
Have a look at IPcop for your distro and it's VPN capabilities. Look here [link|http://www.ipcop.org/1.2.0/en/vpn/html/|http://www.ipcop.org/1.2.0/en/vpn/html/] there's even a section on using Win2K/XP clients.

If all Linux, you definitely want IPsec for VPN.

I've never messed with trying to make linux a PPTP server, but have made it a client which required a custom kernel, some cussing, and more than one beer.

Edit: misread original post, adjusted accordingly

VPN/Firewall 21MB distro. Bottable from CDROM and allows for persistent data on media, or recompile to have your settings in it.

PPTP == Point to Point Tunneling Protocol

It is an open standard, like the others out there for VPN.

You might learn alot from D/Ling and trying it out.

New Not listed on debian, iirc, but OpenVPN ist wunderbar
...uses SSL/TLS instead of IPSEC. Easy to make an ethernet bridge over it.
