New Oh, Poor MicroShaft^H^H^H^Hoft
They have to pay a fine that they might almost feel.

And the concern of losing American jobs? We lost those jobs when we let Microsoft close down so many competitors!

"I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country.
He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country..."

New It's less than one month's cashflow. I doubt they'll feel it

The soul and substance of what customarily ranks as patriotism is moral cowardice and always has been...We have thrown away the most valuable asset we had-- the individual's right to oppose both flag and country when he (just he, by himself) believed them to be in the wrong. We have thrown it away; and with it all that was really respectable about that grotesque and laughable word, Patriotism.

- Mark Twain, "Monarchical and Republican Patriotism"
New Oh, but their **shareholders** will
And, after all, that is all that's important, isn't it?

shrub\ufffdbish (Am., from shrub + rubbish, after the derisive name for America's 43 president; 2003) n. 1. a form of nonsensical political doubletalk wherein the speaker attempts to defend the indefensible by lying, obfuscation, or otherwise misstating the facts; GIBBERISH. 2. any of a collection of utterances from America's putative 43rd president. cf. BULLSHIT

New The money's not what will hurt.
The negotiations failed on points affecting Longhorn. If the commission prevails, Microsoft will have to re-think major features of Longhorn and they don't want to do that.

New I dunno.
Suppose MSFT rolls the big dice. Suppose they say, "Okay, we don't ship to Europe"?

You'd be surprised, I think, how many Microsofties would actually like to see that happen in the belief that "Europe will come to their senses if we just stand up to them. Let them try to live without our really great products."

I've actually heard that almost verbatum from people who should know better.

New Yabut..
If M$ did so, then large, international companies, would have to find other software to use in Europe. And for compatibility, same would be used in US. I really don't think M$ would be that stoopid. (Well, they did bing out Bob and Clippy...)
New Just bundle.
Sell companies something (product "A") at an outrageous price in Europe, and either

A) bundle XP with it physically.

B) Give the purchaser the ability to download XP from a US site after entering the registration number from product "A".

There's nothing that says you can't bundle your (monopoly) product as a 'free' bonus to be included with a product you DON'T have a monopoly on, after all.

And if this practice gets them hauled into court, well, that will take years to resolve too, with another fiscally insignifigant fine...
