New WHAT?!
Event Horizon was the single worst science fiction film I've EVER seen.

New Re: WHAT?!
Yes, it was bad, objectively speaking. But, objectively speaking, falling into a large cellphone full of stars and ending up halfway across the Universe is also rather unlikely.
-drl
New There've been worse.
Not many..but there have been. Like "the core".

New groan that was awful
Remember the movie "Crack in the World"? For a preposterous movie to work, the cast and director have to buy into it. That's why things like "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (actually, Journey to New Mexico) work so well. You don't even mind the absurdity of getting blown out of a volcano and landing in a tree.

-drl
New 2001
Yes, *THAT* 2001. The Space Odyssey.

I watched it twice in the same weekend just to make sure that I didn't miss its greatness the first time around.

Now, the book was enjoyable. The movie was cack.

New AARGH! Heathen!
Well it's Kubrick - love him or hate him, not much middle.

Suggestion - try "Paths of Glory" and "Lolita". Watch them carefully. Note the lighting, framing, and camera motion. One day "bing" the light will go on.
-drl
New Thats this issue with that film.
Its not so much the story as it is the "cinema" of it.

New Exactly!
Well the story ain't bad either, but bingo, Kubrick is like an play/painting (I always think of Vermeer) that lasts 2 hours, has a great score, and if you're really interested, a story. There are also a lot of parallels with music in his work - e.g. the way themes are repeated (bone -> spaceship: pod out -> Bowman in: apes on Earth -> men on Moon: etc.) It's art of the highest class.

Some of the images in 2k still startle me with their sheer audacity. The opening sequence is clearly 100s of millions of years in scope - every time the frame changes, click off another 25 million years. This entire opening up to the space cruiser still gives me goosebumps. You have to see it in 70mm at a quality theater.

New You need to see...
Battle Beyond the Stars
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai
Hybrid
Starcrash (ooooooo David Hasslehoff, feel the quality!)
Battlefield Earth (groooooan!)

And the single worst piece of sci-fi trash (albeit from TV) the Star Wars Holiday Special. The pain...

That all being said, that Anderson guy is a hack. The only way he's still making movies is he's got pictures of people...
