Killer App?

May. Be.

when you pick up yer phone do you hear an operator? No because there is a database that routes your call and stores a record of that call in the switch. CDR's more formally known as Call Detail Records.

I expect people will begin putting up little servers for groups of friends and families that route around the central archtecture and use secure pipes. Why pay for a phone company?

The tree of research must from time to time be refreshed with the blood of bean counters.

New Re: Yeah, but you can put up your own switch now

This all seems to be heading towards merging of

voice = digital data
video = digital data
Image = digital data

Wan backbones = digital data highways

Lan networks = local roads (Wired lan, WiFi lan, PAN (Personal Area Nw)

Wireless = short distance wireless (called Wi-Fi)
long distance wireless (called cell/mobile phone with G3 + next gen)

Then the difference between user interfaces to digital boil down to the diff between

Mobile phone, PDA, Notebook, PC, Workstation, plus a whole new world of other types of devices.

Then just when we all think it has hit its limits, bio recognition (voice, body movements, etc) & holographic presentation devices (1st as 3D glasses, later as desktop, perhaps even floortop) will change the ball park yet again, drive whole new levels of demand & need for capacity & compute power.

Interesting times ...
