I realize this isn't a new book, but I find myself re-reading it for about the third time and still enjoying it immensely.

Unlike The Diamond Age and Snow Crash, Zodiac is set in what could well be the present but still manages to retain a science fiction tone by dealing with biotechnology.

It's the story of an environmental activist, Sangamon Taylor, who is based in Boston and whose job is essentially that of a professional "shit-disturber". He organizes such tactics as cementing off outflow pipes from polluters and other such actions. Despite this description, the story, narrated by Taylor, unfolds at a lively, entertaining pace. Along the way, I learned a ton of interesting material about Boston, toxic waste, narcotics, rock and roll, chemistry and the polluting business.

All in all, it's a great read.
