New "Aliens" Second Cut
This is a clear case of the second cut being inferior to the rirst. The scenes inside the terraforming station before it is attacked by the creatures ruin the gothic atmosphere set up when the Marines arrive later. It was a much better idea to concentrate the action on Ripley's direct experience - and I'm sure this was the point of cutting that scene from the original. The subtext with Ripley's daughter is also uncalled for. The scene with the roving terraformer after attack by the alien larva is also a pointless introduction of the creature before time (think of "Jaws" in which the shark is not directly seen for most of the 1st half of the movie) and needless in any case, as the imagination can supply the details. It made much more sense to delay the appearence of the creatures and larvae until the Maries were inside the station.

New Takes me back.
When I was at university, one of the lads had a copy of Aliens:The Director's Cut on what is known in the trade as a "timer copy".

This is a rough cut that has the elapsed time always visible. The quality was rough as hell (3rd/4th gen VHS copy) but this didn't spoil the film; indeed, it enhanced the atmosphere no end.

I am torn as to whether the Director's Cut is better or worse than the original release; I agree that too much is shown before the marines land on LV426, but the other bits make up for it.
