New "Real sues Microsoft, seeks $1bn damages"
Emboldened by its reception before the European Commission in Brussels last month, RealNetworks is to sue Microsoft for alleged anti-competitive behavior.

"We believe our business would be substantially larger today if Microsoft were playing by the rules," said Real's founder and former Microsoft executive Rob Glaser in a statement.

Real will seek more than $1 billion in damages, and expects the litigation to cost $12 million and take three years to complete. However, since the company is seeking "injunctive relief", an early decision could come sooner rather than later. Real's annual revenue is around $200 million, based on its most recent earnings.

New "Real" a hero? Hardly
They were cut in the mold of MS, attempted to dominate early streaming formats, collect boatloads of intrusive information about your computer, etc. etc. Windows Media Player vs. Real Player is a gunfight of black hats - who cares who dies?

New Re: "Real" a hero? Hardly
I agree Real is cut from the same mold, or is that slime? But, it's good to see them duke it out.

I believe their business would be substantially larger today if their product actually worked and didn't fill up my machine with endless ad-ware.

Multimedia on the PC is a joke - WMP blows chunks and Real is a trojan.

New One thing about Real
if they really want to try to compete, one good way would be to make players for a lot more platforms than they do. If they can show that using real means you can reach the Windows AND Linux guys, while MP means you can only reach the Windows guys, companies looking for that sort of thing will have competitive advantage using Real. However, instead they're tying their players tighter and tighter to Windows... older version work well under Odin on Warp, but newer versions don't because they're tied to Internet Explorer. Considering that all they need to do is open a socket and stream some data, that's Just Dumb.

The Real codecs are binary releases only, compiled for "a wide variety of platforms". What do you think the chances that warp is or will be one of them?
