Get thee to Woody... and FAST.
You need to update to Woody ASAP...
Potato is no longer being updated or maintained.
Then install mailman. (upgrade it at the same time I'll bet)
Once done... then come back a talk:)

Sorry for the delay.
Mailman will not start until a few things are done. newlist mailman Editing /etc/aliases properly. Etc... Then you should prolly look in /usr/share/doc/mailman for more info... including html docs. It feels pretty straight forward. If you need more help holler!

Ok, more stupid questions time, re:MTA
Sounds like I need to configure an MTA (Mail Transfer Agent). Any suggestions?
When configuring Debian, I had the standard 5-part mail agent configuration question pop up (despite not having ever selected a MTA of any sort), to which I answered "5" - no configuration.
I have no idea what app that is, or how to get it to reconfigure. :P

That was exim.
Or, if you're lucky, exim4.
If it was the former, install the latter.
If it was the latter, try dpkg-reconfigure exim4.

exim4 not on Debian Woody.
How important is exim4 versus exim? Version appears to be 3.35.
If needs be, I can pin an experimental version in, but this system has to be ROCK solid, no screwyness EVAR.

exim4 is in testing, so apt-get -t testing install exim4 should get ya going.

Doh..
Well for that hopefully the GPSK (Greg, Peter, Scott, Karten (sigh)) collective will reply as I haven't got a clue :) I'm relatively new to running exim and as I'm using testing, exim4 is the default, thus the only one I've got any (read: miniscule) knowledge about. I misread your post, sorry about that.

Unsure...
...There's some kinda word going around (ask Peter) about some problems with exim4 and SpamAssassin integration, but I'm not up on the details thereof. I've got work to do and such.
Meanwhile, I run exim4 at home as my only MTA. The *BIG* change that I noticed from exim (version 3.x) to exim4 is that instead of one huge-ass monolithic config file, there's a whole directory tree of smaller, more-easily-managed configs. This is a GOOD thing, as the exim3-style exim.conf was a fucking beast, and that's putting it nicely.

Exim4 metaconfig
What's in /etc/exim4 is a Debianism.
The actual config is generated by the update-exim4.conf script which parses the /etc/exim4/ tree and places the resultant monolithic config file in /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated. The init scripts execute the exim4 daemon, specifying this config file.
This is a good thing - just don't automatically expect to see it on other distributions or operating systems.
For Thane: Exim3 is no longer maintained; critical security bugs will be fixed, but the current version of Exim is 4.

I prefer it this way...
I have taken this piece and moved it into an RPM I made for Redhat 7.2+
It is absolutely the single most brilliant config break down I have seen yet of nearly any package.
Apache 1.3.29 in Sid appears to be being done the same way.
Awesome.

You won't get any help from anyone on Exim 3
Everyone who can answer any quesitons you might have moved to 4 long ago. Only Debian stable is still on 3. Get 4.

I would recommend Courier.
Whilst I have had no experience configuring exim, I have had experience with postfix and qmail. Courier wins, hands-down. apt-get install courier. The configuration files have documentation comments in them and man courier works :-). The version in Woody is recent enough.

Male, check. Sexual orientation, straight. Interest in attractive females, v. high. Interest in porn: Zero.
Dunno. Might have been my upbringing or something.
Or it could be that virtually every single porn girl I've ever seen is an ugly skanky ho IMO.
