New You'll be shamed into upgrading your OS

One of the main issues, O'Halloran said, is the security risk Internet-attached PCs running the older OS pose.

"Now, there is a way to get into the infrastructure," he said. "Your buddies down the hall on Windows XP or Windows 2000 might be fine, but you become the Typhoid Mary for the company."

New Re: You'll be shamed into upgrading your OS
As pointed out before, Windows 9x is pefectly safe when pointed at the Internet, while Windows NTXP2k is not, with its broken remote procedure call server. Windows tried to be UNIX, and stepped in it.

Windows 98 is perfectly safe to use on the Internet.

Support ends in 2 weeks.

New Agreed
the modern worms thrive on NT, W2k, XP, W2003 and the RPC exploits. Windows 98 may be safer as the worms cannot seem to infect them the same way. Just watch what attached files you run if running 98.

Funny you mention that Windows tried to be Unix, as of NT, MS tried to put in POSIX support in the OS. Longhorn will be yet another attempt by MS to try and emulate Unix.

Imagine the OS/2 and Windows 3.X boxes on the Internet that these modern worms won't run on because they don't have the RPC exploit and can't run modern 32 bit Windows code. :) Time to start writing 16 bit Windows apps again. Got to find my Delphi 1.0 and Visual BASIC 3.0 disks, there could be a niche here. :) Just kidding.

New I thought you said
that "bit rot" ate your VB 3.0 diskettes several years ago. If not, I'd be interested in a set...

Do you have a computing museum?

New I have the disks
but I never ran a recovery software on it. Well not modern recovery software anyway. I am hoping that I can pull up something workable with it. If I haven't pitched them out and I can find where I put them at.

I may also have a backup of the installed directory somewhere in my Floppy/Tape collection somewhere. I just thought about that recently. Got to get the Colorado 250 tape drive funtional again and look at backup tapes. Would the installed directory work, or will it need files in the System directory like license files to work? I'm betting it needs the license files and system files.

Problem is my basement kind of looks like that wharehouse from the end of "Raiders of the lost Ark" with boxes everywhere. Some have floppies in them. I don't have the time to sort them out. :)
