New 3,2,1 - CUBS LOSE! CUBS LOSE!
Couldn'a happened to a more deserving bunch. What a great series.

The terrorizing of Steve Bartman goes down in infamous baseball history, along with Sam's goat. Let's not forget Sosa's corked bat (and juiced up muscles) and his lame-ass explanation for it. The Cubs and the city got what they deserved. Likewise, Jack McKeon, who has more than 50 years in organized baseball, goes to his first series as manager.

What a collapse - epic it was. Epic.

Add to Dusty Baker's list of amazing flops. I love the guy, but he just can't handle pitchers.

(Edit - from the Suntimes:

"The play was ruined, and Alou jumped out of control in anger, reportedly yelling an obscenity at the fan. A few minutes later, the man cried while holding a sweater over his face as three security guards escorted him in safety out of the stands.

"Later, they gave the man, maybe 25 years old and 5-7, a tan jacket as a disguise so he could leave the stadium safely.

"Cubs security wouldn't release the man's name, saying they worried for his safety. But one security guard, asked what the man had told them, said this:

"Just that he was scared to death. He didn't know what happened till it was over. He was wearing the headphones, and he didn't really know.''

Tonight he's at home, with a police guard. Nice people those.)

New Staack a firk in'em, dere DONE
Baseball works like this:

Two leagues of three divisions.

The winner of each division goes to the postseason, plus the also-ran with the best record (the "wildcard" team). So four teams from each league.

The four teams pair off as follows: the team with the best record plays the wildcard team, with the former having home field advantage. The other two play with the team having the better record getting home field advantage.

These series are best-of-5, two of them in each league. The winners play a best-of-7 series, and the survivors in each league then play in the World Series.

So this year it worked out like this:

NL
===
Braves
Cubs----->Cubs

Giants
Marlins-------->Marlins---------->Marlins

AL
===
Yankees----->Yankees
Twins

Athletics
Red Sox------>Red Sox

The Yankees and Sox play tomorrow in what should be a classic. The winner faces the Marlins in the World Series. These teams hate each other, the two best pitchers in baseball face each other, and they are both nasty throwbacks t0 Bob Gibson and Don Drysdale - meaning they will not suffer a batter to hog the plate.

New Nah...
...I'm bettin Zims only 45 years older than Pedro.

What's he doing charging at players anyway? He's supposed to be keeping his guys on the bench...not clearing it with them.

New You didn't expect that...
...from Martinez did you?

I certainly hope not.

Besides...how do you know it was sincere. I've seen plenty of people "get all weepy" like that....is that all it takes? ;-)

New Teach you to use the Scum-Times as a source!

Dude, Focks TV had pictures of him in the stands an inning later...and trust me, that inning lasted more than "a few minutes"!

Try to contain your glee, St. Louis boy. Just remember that:

1) Your Cardinals watched this collapse from home.
2) your adopted Braves watched the collapse from home.
3) Your prediction of "Fish in Five" failed to materialize
4) Your furtive hope of a "SWEEP SWEEP SWEEP" also failed to materialize.

All in all, I think the Cub fans came a bit better than you did.

But, yeah, It was classic Cubs...... :-(

New Re: Teach you to use the Scum-Times as a source!
To be honest, I had mixed feelings.

1) I lived for almost a year in Chicago (Oak Park). While I met some fine people, including my then from-Chicago GF, for the most part it was a dismal experience. Left a really BAD taste in my mouth.

2) Until this fan incident, I was sort-of kind-of just-about almost pulling for the Cubs. This fan incident was serious in my mind. That kind of thing would just never happen here. We don't have all the good things you do up there, but the people are just better on the whole. Fer chrissakes, the kid is apparently a near-saint, and he needs a police escort? Criminy!

3) I was in a Chicago tavern for the Bears-49ers NFL championship game in 1989. The fans were HORRIBLE. No enthusiasm, gave up after the first TD, no spirit. That gels with my general experience - Chicagoans are great, funny, spirited people - once you get them out of Chicago.
