New America's economy compared to Third World economies

Third World countries typically suffer from institutional weaknesses. They have poor corporate governance: You can't trust business accounting, and insiders often enrich themselves at stockholders' expense. Meanwhile, cronyism is rampant, with close personal and financial links between powerful politicians and the very companies that benefit from public largess. Luckily, in America we don't have any of these weaknesses. Oh, wait. (Isn't that all history? No. According to The Wall Street Journal, we are again hearing warnings that "optimism is based on massaged earnings.")

[...]

But at a certain point we'll have a Wile E. Coyote moment. For those not familiar with the Road Runner cartoons, Coyote had a habit of running off cliffs and taking several steps on thin air before noticing that there was nothing underneath his feet. Only then would he plunge.

What will that plunge look like? It will certainly involve a sharp fall in the dollar and a sharp rise in interest rates. In the worst-case scenario, the government's access to borrowing will be cut off, creating a cash crisis that throws the nation into chaos.

New And that goes hand in hand with...
The recent politics post [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=121193|http://z.iwethey.org...?contentid=121193] pointing out that Germany has now surpassed the USA as an exporter (with less than half our population, and far fewer imports), which already had me uncomfortably in mind of [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=107614|http://z.iwethey.org...?contentid=107614].

BTW has anyone else taken my recommendation to heart and read [link|http://www.wealthanddemocracy.com/|Wealth and Democracy] for themselves?

Cheers,
Ben

New /me jumps around and waves hand.
I've only just completed chapter 2 - and I feel like stepping out back 'n shooting myself. I've recommended this book to just about everybody I know, too.
In that final hour, when each breath is a struggle to take, and you are looking back over your life's accomplishments, which memories would you treasure? The empires you built, or the joy you spread to others?

Therin lies the true measure of a man.
New Oh, it gets better
Um, given I've only just completed chapter 2 - and I feel like stepping out back 'n shooting myself. perhaps I should say worse.

I don't mean by that that it gets worse, well I do, but I don't mean it that way. Unless you thought I meant the opposite of what I meant, in which case vice versa (or verce visa if you prefer).

Hrm. I seem to be getting into a bind. So let's just say that it gets more effective. :-)

Cheers,
Ben

New Kevin Philips
..is no wild-eyed conspiracy theorist - he was an arch-conservative in the Barry Goldwater mold (that is, the honest, non-radical, good kind of conservative). He was an advisor to Nixon and wrote a screed called "The Emerging Republican Majority". Then he parted ways with the Republicans when he saw the current policy trend emerging as far back as the late 70s. He was a pointed critic of Reagan, Thatcher, and Bush pe`re. He correctly foresaw the dangers of "free-trade" globalism. Boiled down, what he has been exposing for 25 years is the poverty and cynicism of finance capitalism, the thing we actually practice.

A fairly recent interview (9/02):
