New Report: Microsoft dominance poses security risk
[link|http://news.com.com/2100-1029_3-5081214.html|http://news.com.com/...29_3-5081214.html]

A computer industry group critical of Microsoft plans to release a report Wednesday asserting that the software giant's dominance in key technologies threatens the national infrastructure.

The report from the Computer and Communications Industry Association argues that the reliance on a single technology such as the Windows operating system for such an overwhelming majority of computer systems threatens the security of the U.S. economy and critical infrastructure, according to a draft seen by CNET News.com.

The paper, written by a handful of security experts, also warns that many security improvements planned by Microsoft are likely designed to raise the barrier that deters customers from switching to another operating system.

"Under the guise of security, (Microsoft is) achieving lock-in," said Bruce Schneier, chief technology officer for network monitoring service Counterpane Internet Security and one of the paper's three authors. "It's using security technologies to extend the monopolies."

So the dominance of MS technologies is a security threat, and MS is doing what it can to prevent switching to altrnative platforms. Someone wake up the DOJ.

P.S. Mozilla seems to freeze up when I view that link. Causing my whole computer to slow down or come to a hault until I kill Mozilla out of memory.

New RE: moz
No problems here, Norm...using Moz 1.4 under (ugh) XP...

Although I do have my ID string Karsten-ized to report itself as Insecure Exposer 6.0 as well as Moz. Maybe that has something to do with it?

[Edit: added details about IE spoof]

Boy I'd like to see those words on a PR banner behind [Treasury Secretary John] Snow at the podium:

New No probs here.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5) Gecko/20030916
In that final hour, when each breath is a struggle to take, and you are looking back over your life's accomplishments, which memories would you treasure? The empires you built, or the joy you spread to others?

Therin lies the true measure of a man.
New I don't get a problem with that page anymore
at first, it was like it had a Java based ad that was misbehaving. Everything was white in the browser except for the ad. Then Mozilla wouldn't update itself and showed transparent windows. Then everything else in the system slowed down to a crawl until I killed Mozilla out of memory. I'd report it, but I cannot replicate it. I am using 1.4, and have had this problem since 1.2 on various web pages. Usually ones with ads in them. Only thing I can remember is that it was a woman in a red dress with a flower pattern, but that ad isn't showing up anymore. It scanned up and down and did some kind of hoakey animation.

New Windows breeds, much like a virus
which is why there are so many Windows systems out there.

But I was talking about reproducing the problem so the Mozilla team could reproduce it and find the problem and fix it. I just recently found out that IE did the same thing, so it could be the system or some file they share going wonky?
