Yeah, I would. Something like [link|http://www.snort.org/|snort] or the [link|http://www.prelude-ids.org/|Prelude IDS] would do just fine.

And yes, good point about how spammers finding, say, either an open SMTP relay, an Internet-reachable Squid proxy, or a Wingate proxy on your netblock might well ruin your whole month.
