New Windows XP problem
My own fault really, if the bios didnt recognise the CD as a boot device should have stopped.
Gear: tower IBM 133 pentium with windows 98 loaded. Unkown model as covers have been removed and no model info on the back,
IBM bios showed the cdrom as a bootable device but would be skipped when inserting the XP CD and booted to harddrive win98.
Needed some drivers off the 98 CD, customer no longer has it.
Thought problem would be solved by installing XP via a run/CDdrive:/setup.exe. Installed OK, rebooted and a error message popped cannot load c:\\windows\\system32\\fastfat.XXX not found, boot to CD and choose repair.
Did I mention that it wouldnt boot to CD?
went to another xp box and at the cmd prompt issued sys A: to make a bootable copy then copy the needed file to the drive. XP doesnt appear to be able to make a bootable floppy, neither does win2k.
reset all the cables on box, still cant boot to cd.
Is there a bootable floppy that can read XP formated Harddrives so I could copy needed files to get this dogshit up enough to recover some data before I throw it away.
Went into the BIOS and to change the startup configurations, CDrom isnt a choice. It is there from prior usage but if you attempt a change, cdrom is no longer a choice.
thank you,
Bill

New Try "winnt /?" or "winnt32 /?"
I believe that one of those gives you the option to make boot disks. Don't know if the functionality is in XP, but it was in 2k.
In that final hour, when each breath is a struggle to take, and you are looking back over your life's accomplishments, which memories would you treasure? The empires you built, or the joy you spread to others?

Therin lies the true measure of a man.

New Re: Windows XP problem
Something really fishy is happening with XP to prevent other OSes from coexisting with it.

As I speculated before, I think some DLLs are getting created/moved on the fly, in the XP boot process.

I've seen STOPs in NT when the CDROM was not available after the first stage of installation, but only SCSI CDs on obscure controllers. Put in a generic ATAPI CDROM and go from there. I'm sure the driver disk option when installing is still there, no? (No XP around here any more...)

New nope bios error
when trying to change the order of the boot. the CDROM does not appear as an option. I think the BIOS has "lost" the ability to access the CDROM but the OS could find it. Worse case screw with the IDE cables and settings. Since I dont charge for what I cant fix could get expensive.
tjanx,

New As you have a second XP box...
Why not just pop the dead machine's HDD in there and copy the files that way?

New Easily solved
Create the XP bootdisk based on the version of XP that you have. Follow this link:
[link|http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm|http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm]

For XP Home:
[link|http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?releaseid=33290|http://www.microsoft...p?releaseid=33290]

For XP Sp1 Home:
[link|http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?releaseid=42818|http://www.microsoft...p?releaseid=42818]

For XP Pro:
[link|http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?releaseid=33291|http://www.microsoft...p?releaseid=33291]

For XP Sp1 Pro:
[link|http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?releaseid=42819|http://www.microsoft...p?releaseid=42819]

Download on another machine, make the boot disks for the version of XP you need, and then boot off of the XP floppies to access the CD-ROM.

Hope it helps.
