Worth the rental fee, if you haven't already seen it at the movie theater.
The scene in the beginning of the movie, the shooting of the man Renee Zelweiger is having an affair with, is kept to a minimum, because there's no need to overly focus on the event. Some improper words throughout the movie, but nothing my kids haven't heard on various cable channels. Having the story flow as if it were a Broadway play, with a narrator setting the scenes, works. The commentary from the narrator helps set the mood.
But it's the extras on the DVD that made it worthwhile. Did you know that Richard Gere started in show business doing song and dance routines, besides acting? I didn't. Yet here he does his own singing (he's not all that bad) and dancing; in fact, he learned to tap dance for the movie. Catherine Zeta-Jones started her career on stage, so singing and dancing were natural for her, and I think she was great at it (being gorgeous doesn't hurt either). Renee Zelweiger, whom I don't find particularly attractive, wears several outfits that make her look great. One even seems to be a Marilyn Monroe style, as if to pay homage to her, because of all of the sequins and Renee's blond hair styling. She dances just fine (and has pretty nice legs too) and does all of her own singing. She was better than I expected her to be.
The plot doesn't drag along; it flows quickly and smoothly between the acting scenes and the singing/dancing routines. Best of all were the exterior shots of buildings in my favorite city.
A perfect rental for a Saturday evening with a bowl of popcorn.
