The Republican-led campaign to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis in California has spawned a Democratic-sponsored Web site with a petition to "recall" President Bush.
The U.S. Constitution does not allow presidential recall initiatives, but that hasn't deterred the sponsors of the site, [link|http://www.bushrecall.org|www.bushrecall.org], which went up Thursday.
The similarities between the political dilemma of Davis and that of Bush were too great to ignore for the "bushrecall" sponsor, a new political action committee called the Fair and Balanced PAC.
"I was just struck by everything being said by the people promoting the recall in California and how you could take the things they're saying about Davis word for word, stick Bush's name in there and it would apply," said Mike Lux, the Democratic political consultant who organized the PAC with the help of former Clinton White House press secretary Joe Lockhart.
"Except the numbers are bigger for Bush," he added.
Lux noted, for example, that the GOP rap against Davis has been the state budget going from a $27 billion surplus to a $38 billion deficit and the loss of thousands of jobs during his term in office.
In the case of the president, the federal budget has gone from record surpluses to a record deficit, currently projected at $455 billion, and job losses at nearly 3 million.
"The Republicans in California say a chief executive should be held accountable when the budget goes awry and when bad times come, and we agree," said Lux.
