A Houston used car dealer was fined $58 million and sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty Monday to providing a nationwide cocaine distribution ring with cars that had secret compartments for hiding drugs.
Farhat admitted, in his plea agreement, that he supplied drug dealers with vehicles with hidden compartments designed to conceal cocaine distributed in Houston, New York and Chicago.
Farhat's dealership, which specialized in used luxury cars, sent the cars to a specialist who fitted them with hidden compartments designed to carry illegal drugs.
The compartments, located in various parts of the vehicles, could only be opened by performing a complicated series of operations, Assistant U.S. Attorney Martha Minnis said.
