New Win2002 - In case there was ever any doubt

I recently extracted my iPAQ with Win2002 & Zaurus with Linux, from baggage & set about to get each working on Wi-Fi LAN (did this exercise 1st around a year ago).

I have a Linksys Wi-Fi adapter that plus into both.

With the Zaurus I plugged in the card in & it activated & allowed me to connect to the Internet immediately.

With iPAQ I had to 1st install the Wi-Fi driver (all prior installs dissapeared when the battery went flat while in transit (a regular feature of color screen PDAs). The driver installed easily enough but after 1 hr trying to figure out (yet again) why IE on the PDA won't use the Wi-Fi card & making no sense (yet again) of the connection instructions, I have given up (as I did a year ago) until I can spend a looong time trying to make (yet again) some sense of the mess that is networking on Win2002 PDAs.

I seem to recall recently reading that the next version of this *&^%$#( software has been completely re-written so that human beings can make better sense of it.

Microsoft - I just luv ya !!! The quality of your commercial products astounds (no one)

Cheers

New Does this bring back some memories? #46272.
[link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=46272|46272] and following.

I hope you get it working soon.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Tks for the link - saved me searching.

There are a couple of comments I made there that may help. When installing the Wi-Fi ndriver I was asked for the id & entered 'ANY' as I hadn't forgotten that part of the prior lesson.

But, I see I also said the config from the install was not being saved so maybe I just need to go back to the Wi-Fi config software on the iPaq to solve this.

As before, the instructions point you to SETTINGS in Win2002 & these make no sense whatsoever as adding a connection in SETTINGS seems to only allow you to nominate Modems & not network adaptors. The instructions really are pathetic.

New Re: Win2002 - In case there was ever any doubt
Was musing on this today - how MS wins again and again by releasing unfinished software while promising better - witness the witless, Windows ME.

FINALLY Windows NT/call me XP - is somewhat "finished". Somewhat.

New Got it working

What is needed is that when you go to settings/connections/connections (yup)
you get a screen that has ...

3 drop downs
one for the internet (with default selection ...)
'Internet Settings'
one for Work (with default selection ...)
'Work Settings'
and third says My network card connects to (with default ...)
'Work'

Because I am going through a Wi-Fi router connected to an adsl modem, I assumed I left it as Work but no - I needed to select Internet & off it goes.

It only took 10 mins to figure out this time so things must be improving (I am learning something about Win2002 network settings).

Cheers

(next time I buy a Win PDA I'll make sure it is ...
1) actually running Win2003
2) has a Wi-Fi built in and already configured by the manufacturer
)

After reading all the above (including the past thread), there might actually be a 'next time' you'd buy a Win PDA?

Who has never, and will never :)
New Wellll

I was going to add a further remark to the effect that it was really moot (that I would buy another such PDA)

But, MS might get it right one day !!!

Cheers Doug :-)

Sure, it's theoretically possible, but who the hell would actually do such a thing?
