New Heads up: upgrade issue if you run SLES7 on iSeries LPARs
Recently, I decided to upgrade Linux LPARs on some iSeries boxes. I'm currently running SLES7, which has been out for some time and performs very well. Other iSeries Linux choices include Red Hat and Turbo Linux (no Debian yet).

When I went to upgrade to SLES8, I noticed that the only choices in the installer were to: a). perform a new install, b). boot existing system, or c). abort installation. No upgrade option...

So, I dropped SuSE support a line and they responded:

"There is no direct upgrade from SLES7 to SLES8. The base system was changed completely between the two releases. You will have to back up your data from the SLES7 system and perform a clean install of SLES8."

Sheesh, you'd think if you were trying to grow the enterprise Linux market that you'd make it as easy as possible for customers to continue using your distro. Guess I'm backing up and doing new installs. Argh!

New "What's your Quake frame rate?"...

...I asked the zSeries guy at the LWE IBM booth.

\r\n\r\n

He didn't have a number for the machine he was demoing, but he did have a rate for about three generations back. Not very high, naturally, as the video support on the boxes isn't all that great....

\r\n\r\n

Still some interesting stuff. Mostly noted that they were set up to run SuSE, Red Hat, and Debian, on LPARs, the last of which somewhat surprised me. Also sort of neat to note that the system console was a Thinkpad laptop. Well, actually two of them (virtually all systems are redudant), running....OS2. Recognized the widget set. Apparently Windows doesn't scale to the number of processes required fyr system management.

\r\n\r\n

This particular box (8 engines, four in use, only one book filled) was powering demos and systems in three booths at LWE. Including one SuSE demo which just spit out and launched new Linux images -- was at 350 or so when I stopped by to check. They've hit something in the order of 60-90k images in a single LPAR.

\r\n\r\n

Big boxen.

New OS/2 in not really all that odd spots.
S390s (or whatever they're called these days) run OS/2 boxes as consoles, too. Probably keeps the operators running things they're not supposed to as a side effect. :-)

New Mostly threading and virtual memory management
Warp is a lot better at that than Windows is. I understand the scheduler and pager was basically written by a bunch of the old VM guys seconded in to clean it up for version 1.3 after the MS divorce.

I have both Warp and Windows partitions on this particular box; I can run so many more programs under OS/2 and retain responsiveness over Windows that it's not even amusing... more sad. Even Moz is pretty good on a P200, as long as you have at least 96MB RAM in the thing. It'll thrash like a pig if you need to switch to another big program (say WordPro for example) but after the switch is completed the programs perform very well.

New No, No, No...
OS/2 is DEAD....

Com on GUYS... it's been like 10 years and you are STILL using something that works?

GAH... OS/2 Biggots... (Of which *I* still have my wrapped Warp 3 CDs, I think...)

And my 1.3 install Diskettes and the Free Upgrade to v2.0. I know I have.

I know of a medical specialist who still does his accounts on a Commodore 64 because it works. :-)

New The funny thing is...
us warpers are probably feeling a lot less pressure to move to linux than a lot of the Windows people are. No viruses, the system is stable, there are applications (all claims to the contrary notwithstanding), and it runs so well on modern hardware that it's just stupid.

New Re: Heads up: upgrade issue if you run SLES7 on iSeries
No, it was certainly required. SuSE started out very idiosyncratic but has become more LSBish over time. 7 to 8 was a big step.

In any case, it's no big deal to just start over, is it?

New Yes, it is a big deal....
....when you have sixty of these LPARs and have to re-load each
from scratch. Figure install time plus time for save and restore
of user data.
