New Your getting too easy to refute.
Florida ranked 29th in the nation with a $38,230 average teacher salary last year -- $5,100 below the national average. The same year, Florida had the seventh-largest average class size in the nation.

For new teachers, the $28,986 average beginning salary fell far below starting salary offers in other fields for recent college graduates. Accounting graduates, for example, were offered an average $37,143; sales/marketing, $40,033; math/statistics, $49,548; computer science, $49,749; and engineering, $50,033.

The $43,250 average teacher salary lagged behind the average wages of other white-collar jobs. Mid-level accountants, for instance, earned an average $52,664, computer system analysts, $71,155; engineers, $74,920; and attorneys, $82,712.

In Pinellas, here's the breakdown of the "average" salary. Keep in mind the "average" years of experience is 15.8 years.

Bachelor's: 36,777
Master's: 45,874
Doctorate: 46,871
Overall: 38,797

The soul and substance of what customarily ranks as patriotism is moral cowardice and always has been...We have thrown away the most valuable asset we had-- the individual's right to oppose both flag and country when he (just he, by himself) believed them to be in the wrong. We have thrown it away; and with it all that was really respectable about that grotesque and laughable word, Patriotism.

Alaska's average teacher salary for 2001-02 was $49,028, up 1.9 percent from the previous year, said a statement from the union. Starting teachers in Alaska made $36,035 on average, down 0.7 percent from the previous year.
...
The average Alaska teacher's salary is about $5,000 above the national average of $44,367. The national average for beginning teachers was $30,719, the union statement said.

California had the highest average teacher salary at $54,348. Others at the top were Michigan ($52,497), Connecticut ($52,376), Rhode Island ($51,619) and New York ($51,020).

I can believe that the salary for a position waaaay out in BFE (Savoonga) would be $70K.

New Okay, I misread, but there is STILL a missed point here.
When people want to rant about "how much teachers make" they ALWAYS cite "average teacher salaries". What most miss is that the "average teacher" has been teaching for somewhere between 15 and 20 years. Take a look at the "starting teacher" salaries, consider the tax/budget cuts and ask yourself if you think $25,000/year for a Master's degree is fair.

You think you'd want to do your job for 16 years for LESS than you made during your first year in IT? I don't.

Mikem

New No, I didn't miss that point.
You missed one, though. Don't jump down someone's throat like that. It isn't necessary, even if you didn't misread. Shit like that is a prime example of what's poisoning the atmosphere in here.

You'll also please note that the starting salaries in *Alaska* are much higher than Florida. Florida is in the lower 50th percentile.

Another note: a person who worked for 15-20 years started at a lower salary than the current starting salary. Bad comparison, to compare that with current salaries. *My* first year in IT paid considerably less than what average salary teachers make now. Less than half as much, in fact.

And to preempt another line of attack: my sister was a teacher. I know all about their lousy pay. Flawed rhetoric isn't going to help that, however.

When Reid Riedlinger advertises for staff, he offers them subsidized housing, laptop computers, eight computers and a copy machine for each classroom, and a full-time teaching assistant! Riedlinger, superintendent of schools in the two-building Wellpinit School District, which serves 402 K-12 children on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Washington, also offers classes that average just 17 students. Plus, he told Education World, he throws in free breakfast and lunch if teachers eat it with students, and he promises no staff meetings longer than 30 minutes.
, hell just for the no meetings over 30 minutes rule would be a blessing. :-)
