New Microsoft is taking Linux seriously

Microsoft has a lab set up to test Microsoft's beast next to a Linux based one and see the results of performance and features. This will be interesting if they find that Linux can do the same features for a lot less. This does show that Microsoft is taking Linux seriously and considers Linux a main competitor.

...that they're trying to find which linux config options to hamstring so that their systems look better in benchmark tests.

Lord knows they were successful doing this with the Samba benchmarks.

If you realize that this is the result of 35 years of continuous development across a wide range of compute platforms, there's a certain sense to it. It's internally consistent with its development history. Not that it doesn't suck.
