New Seagull Posting
I'd like to take this opportunity to ask a number of people, no names mentioned (...yet) to cease and desist from seagull posting.

This is the practice of flying over a set of fora and crapping out a large number of small posts, usually consisting of a (not-very-interesting) link and a single-line comment.

Friends, this is not Slashdot. I can read Slashdot. I can read all sorts of other websites, and for that reason I don't need their links recycled here.

Of course, if one has something substantive to say about a link, then that's a whole different kettle of fish (to keep the nautical theme going).

New I'm sure you have someone specific...
...in mind...or a couple...but this is the MO of several regular posters...and has been for >YEARS<.

Now...all of a sudden...its starting to piss you off?

New Re: I'm sure you have someone specific...
Am I doing this? I'm still not completely familiar with all your terms and what everything is called. If I'm doing this, plase let me know.

Thanks :)

New Nope...
Your postings are not what Peter is talking about. This person knows of whom he speaks.

Although, you do sometimes come across as rather naive or obtuse... that is mostly tolerable.

No what we are talking about is something like:

Sitting in a bar, and there are alot of people there having discussions... then this person deciding to join every conversation there at the bar. Narry an inclination what is really be talked about.

Annoys the crap out people.

Thanks Greg. I know I'm naive about some things, (for example, just learned that the phone scam is called Slamming), and although I had to look up obtuse, you are right, if perception has anything to do with logic, I tend to have very little common sense logic. Although I think I am getting a little better. ;)

And you guys are all good teachers. :)

Oh, but let me add, (as I've told Scott many times), please NEVER post something and expect me to get it subtly. If you have something to complain about or tell me I'm doing wrong, please be direct. I simply don't have the capability to read between the lines, so it would miss me completely if you "hinted" something to me.

Thanks.

That helps explain it. You mean when they post in lots of forums. I only post in a few, actually, and I try to have some reason for posting, I don't post just to post if I can help it.

...just the timing.

I've been annoyed by the style all along...just pointing out that it is certainly not new to this board.

New Sheltered life?
I heard this a ton on the radio 10 or so years ago. Of course I was mostly listening to WLUP in Chicago (Steve Dahl, etc.) back then. Supposedly written by Englebert Humperdinck. 'Very' funny when listened to. I couldn't find any links to the actual recording though. More's the pity.

Dr. Dimento was a favorite back in the day. "2 heads are better than one" is one of my all time songs.

New Not sure of the song you're mentioning

"2 heads are better than one" is one of my all time songs.

The only one I can think of that's close is "I Live In A Split Level Head" by Napoleon XIV. Best when listened to through headphones; the stereo effect is intense.

New I admit I do it sometimes
and I'll do what I can to not do it. If I post a link, how much should I write to explain it? In the past I got into trouble for writing too much, so I tried to trim down my posts to a smaller level leaving out some details. Now if I write too little I get into trouble. So how much is too little and how much is too much? I also cannot quote a source too much, or get into trouble as well. So how much am I allowed to quote?

New Stop and drop...
I'm probably guilty of it, too.

Sadly, I'm sometimes busy, sometimes slow.

When I'm busy, I'll ignore postings to me for days.

When I'm slow, I tend to reply to way too much stuff, maybe even meddling where I shouldn't be.

New Clarificationment? (plus a whine of my own)
Is it that you are reading posts from people get up and say
"today I'm going to post something ....... now what shall I post?"
Or is it sheer volume of small unenlightening posts?
Or is it the duplication of the same posts in several places which is annoying?

I personally like getting pointers to URLs, particularly from people
whose judgement I have come to trust. Nothing more than "hey I found this
interesting" is necessary to make a post worthwhile from such people.
The more interesting ones tend to be from people who don't post all that
frequently (IMO).

Something which irks me are posts which just represent a thinly veiled attempt
to be first with a breaking piece of news (which is usually to be found on the
home page of every news site, on every radio station and on every TV station).
I guess even these can morph into something substantive though.
And of course...I don't find it annoying when *I* do it :-)

And another thing ....... :-)
people who just want to be *read* but not do any *reading*.
"Look at me I'm provocative" and "Look at me I'm superior" gets dull after a few years (or seconds).
