I've done the same thing, clicked on a forum to post the thread to, and forgot to check the "As new topic" box.
One size fits all drivers, don't always work. Sometimes you have to get the drivers for your OS, or use a driver for an older model of printer that yours emulates and try that one. Apparently Norton Utilities for DOS uses an Epson or some other printer code set so it can print from DOS, or maybe it just does a straight ASCII print from DOS with no codes? Try a "Generic Text Only" printer driver and point it to your printer port and see if you can print a text only page from Notepad. If this works, you may just need a different driver. If it messes up, there may be a problem with Windows related to printing DLLs and other things. The "Generic Text only" driver is under the "Generic" Manufacturers listing.
Maybe this Canon driver page from Printer-Drivers.com will help?

You might find it on Canon's web site [link|http://www.canon.com|http://www.canon.com] but it is hard to navigate.

They say to remove all Canon drivers before upgrading to XP, or you might have problems.
