There's folly in pursuing Boeing's 'dreamliner'

Notwithstanding crippling budget crises, 19 states have risen to bait set out by the Boeing Co. and proffered bids -- some breathtakingly large -- to land the assembly plant for Boeing's proposed new, fuel-conserving 7E7 jetliner. Appropriately, the new machine is dubbed the Dreamliner.

The biggest bidder of all is Washington state, which put together a subsidy package estimated to total $3.2 billion (yes, billions!) in value.

For 1,000 jobs -- midpoint of the 800 to 1,200 Boeing is estimating -- that works out to roughly $160,000 per worker per year over a plant life span of about 20 years.

Yet the jobs will average just $65,000 a year in pay.

New Re: There's folly in pursuing Boeing's 'dreamliner'
Boeing is going to piss around and fiddle about until Airbus creams them.

They should be selling 737s and 717s by the bushel basket. They are cheap, proven, and profitable.

Sorry, that too, is a disaster. God is hung up on contracts (Father Neslongate) while El Repulicanos are mired in negotiations with media-focus groups.

My God, I've become Ashton now that I'm published!

...wealth, recognition.

The financial, mental and physical health of the nation were never part of the program. Being 'hung up' or 'mired' are just excuses for choices made.

You just aren't cynical enough.

New Plus payrol taxes. Plus corp income taxes
Plus business that gets attracted by Boeing being there.
These things add up, you know.

May not be a very profitable bid, but not necessarily foolish either.

New You have a point there.
There are side effects. Many of Boeing's suppliers would open up nearby facilities as well. When BMW opened up an assembly plant in South Carolina, quite a few of their suppliers did the same. BMW got an [link|http://www.conway.com/ssinsider/incentive/ti0210.htm|outrageous deal] from SC.

New Plus corp income taxes ???
How much does Boeing really pay in taxes? I wil bet with all the tax breaks they get that they pay little or no corporate income tax.
New Near nothing.
Boeing has some heavy-duty sales tax exemptions - and since the transfer of airliners to airlines happens over international waters, (airline crew, Boeing crew, and executives from both sides get on plane, fly over Pacific ocean, sign papers) the sale of the planes themselves is exempt. Tax revenues directly from Boeing are almost nil.

Boeing has spent the past 20 years in Washington state as the infamous 900lb gorilla, and their resistance to many development projects (and their associated taxes) has helped to transform the Puget Sound basin from a nice place to live into commuter hell. Now that the writing's on the wall, and they've sucked the blood out of the region, they're complaining about the mess they helped make, and using it as an excuse to wring even more concessions out of the state.

Fuck 'em. I hope whichever idiots take them next the best of luck - they'll need it.

New Boeing to cut up to 5,000 more jobs

Announcement comes on top off 35,000 layoffs already set

SEATTLE, July 17 - The Boeing Co. plans to cut 4,000 to 5,000 more jobs than previously planned from its commercial airplane division by the end of the year, as the airline industry remains mired in the worst downturn in its history.

The cuts will come through attrition and layoffs, Boeing spokesman Bill Cogswell said Thursday. Since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Boeing had said it would need to cut 35,000 from its work force by the end of 2003.
Now, with the continuing aviation slump, worsened by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome outbreak this year, Boeing believes it needs to further slash its employment levels, Cogswell said.

"The industry still is in trouble and we continue to have to monitor the situation closely and update our plans accordingly and size production to meet the demand," he said. The additional cuts disclosed Thursday represent up to 8 percent of the commercial airplane division\ufffds work force of 61,000.

New I heard good things about it
Is that the "wing body" craft? One of the bigger news magazines gave the concept raving reviews. The only drawback was that it had less windows seats. Most of the debate over it was wether the lack of window seats would reduce its value to flyers so much as to not make up for it in feul economy.

Oops. It's not the same plane. I was thinking of this one:
