New Suggestions for cheap system from Frys?
bconnors had some problems with the system I gave him, scandisk locked up and now the system won't boot. He's thinking about replacing it with an inexpensive system from Frys. Any suggestions? Key thing is inexpensive.

He thinks he could get by with a case, CPU, motherboard, memory and new drive, and use the CDROM, floppy, etc. from the old system I gave him.

He'll be checking in from work, if he can(they killed net access at his work due to nimba). If not, I'll relay the suggestions to him.

New e-Machine?

Here's a P-III 550, 64 MB, 15 GB, DVD. $259

On a tip from OhRyan, I bought a 600 version, then two 500s for others, after the 600s were sold out.

PS may be a bit lite for those Gbyte Video cards, though a friend says an alt. PS (Korea, remember) is available. Likely 120W. I've burned CDs with no sweat. Also no probs running a borrowed Matrix on the DVD - dunno how many watts that draws

Have same video card as this - fine for my uses. 98SE w/ 98-lite is happy (and -lite IS faster sans the junk). Drop in a 128 stick for 192: who 'needs' faster? For heat, other reasons - kinda like the vert. mount for HD, near front panel - EZ 2-screw install of CDRW; all in all a no-brainer.

Model number of my 600 version was GEN 610, so it's pretty clearly another e-Machine deal. All 3 machines bought in June were new (described as this one is), worked fine - shipped cheaply. Guy I talked to sounded knowledgeable and helpful - no idea re warranty service as, nothing broke.

HTH,

A.
New Thanx!
Forwarded the info to him.

New Frys tip
I just recently bought a 30gig IDE drive. I went in and saw a couple of models mark down to the $90-$100 range. I picked one out and grabbed one of their sales people to print out a quote sheet* after finding the drive on their computer. Out of curiosity, I asked if it was the cheapest drive. After a few taps on the keyboard, the sales rep found a similar drive - same capacity, rpm, cache, etc. - for $70. I asked the guy where it was on the floor and he said it wasn't on display nor advertised. The only way a customer could find it was to ask.

*If you've never been to Fry's, the way it works is they have drives, memory, and cpu's on display on a wall with price tags. You pick one out and a sales droid prints out a price quote that you take to the register up front. After you pay, another clerk gets your hardware from a cage at the front of the store.
