Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Wasn't originally written as a joke?
Unix's dd, i mean, not JCL.

Wade.

"All around me are nothing but fakes
Come with me on the biggest fake of all!"

New Perhaps both :)
JCL couldn't possibly have been the product of a sane mind. :)

never thought about the dd link though - I just thought it meant Dataset Definition on the MVS side, and no idea what it meant on the unix side. Well there ya go, maybe I just learned something.

New Tape management, IIRC
Most of the core functionality of dd is most useful (and most frequently used) when pulling data from tapes. Given that tape was pretty much Lingua Franca for transferring MF data from the 1970s through the 1990s, and various low-level formatting issues (blocksize, packing factors, buffering, etc., etc.). The syntax was in common enough use, I suppose that it was adopted for Unix when dealing with data originating on Mainframe systems. Not a joke, sorry to say.

Google, as usual, [link|http://www.google.com/search?q=unix+dd+command+history|is useful].

What part of "gestalt" don't you understand?
New Yup, I love the unix dd
In a Data Warehousing environment, it proved to be invaluable on a number of occasions.

I'm amused Google spat out an ad for me to search my family history :) Maybe I have a long lost relative caleld Dee-Dee or something.

Interesting stuff to read whilst I'm stuck at work, anyway.

New OT: re 'Lingua Franca' (edit is for a typo)
Now that the defacto language of international business and politics seems more often to be English than French, is it time to change the phrase to 'lingua engla'?

New Re: OT: re 'Lingua Franca'
Consider: a latin phrase for use of French now refers to English....

<sigh>

I suggest a new strategy: let the Wookie win.
