New Road to Perdition
Rent it. Watch it. Enjoy it.

Tom Hanks is in the most opposite role in his career - a mid level mobster in an unnamed town in 1931, following the orders of the local crime boss Paul Newman. (Sad to say, any actor aged 70 and up could have played his part.) But Hanks is a serious, understated role in a well thought out story. I liked this much better than his acting in "Cast Away", where he's the Fedex executive stranded on a Pacific island. No humor, just quiet drama based upon the strengths of the cast. And the supporting roles make the movie - without them, Hanks' part would be lessened because there wouldn't be the underlying tension as to the reason WHY he does what he does and will do.

New Unnamed town?
I haven't seen the movie, but I know it was filmed here in Chicago. Also, having seen the commercials, I know some of the bridges that they drive over, and have done so myself, even.

New There are visits to Chicago in the film...
...as Capone is the bosses boss, where the big show takes place.

I'll also chime in with a recommendation for the film. Love the music - both eerie and soothing if that's possible. The movie itself is a personalized version of the gangster genre. In some ways, some of the scenes play out in a Kubrickesque sort of fashion.
New Re: Unnamed town?
I didn't catch the name of the town that Tom Hanks' character comes from, but he does drive to Chicago for a meeting with Frank Nitti, Capone's right hand man.

Some outdoor scenes were filmed in East Dundee.
