Tom Hanks is in the most opposite role in his career - a mid level mobster in an unnamed town in 1931, following the orders of the local crime boss Paul Newman. (Sad to say, any actor aged 70 and up could have played his part.) But Hanks is a serious, understated role in a well thought out story. I liked this much better than his acting in "Cast Away", where he's the Fedex executive stranded on a Pacific island. No humor, just quiet drama based upon the strengths of the cast. And the supporting roles make the movie - without them, Hanks' part would be lessened because there wouldn't be the underlying tension as to the reason WHY he does what he does and will do.
